About Modesto
Modesto, founded in 1870, was initially sought as a railroad town to allow efficient passage between northern and southern California. The Central Pacific Railroad sold lots to facilitate the plan. During World War II, Modesto used its resources to provide sustainable food, like canned goods and powdered milk, to the U.S. armed forces. Agriculture is still a major part of life. The city produces a variety of farm products, including milk, almonds, chickens, and corn silage. Modesto is the county seat of Stanislaus County and has a population of 218,771. There’s lots to do here, such as visiting museums and parks and checking out the largest family-owned winery in the U.S., Gallo Family.
